Portraits are themselves my language
They speak to the ears of those who will hear

It is a dog whistle
Those who hear will hear

Tentative but also urgent

Playful but also mindful

In conversation with the person in view

Her words carry my brushstrokes and apply my paint

Her being speaks of life and of value
Of dignity and of hope

The sanctity of life

The fragility of life

The fickleness of human wisdom and the strength from the wisdom that comes from above

She speaks to the strength of humankind

The strength of a woman

It looks at the ordinary, the day-to-day

Un-championed being
Who at once, in this moment
For these few moments

Is being seen

And her light shines bright
Illuminating the darkness of her skin making them appear like stars in the night sky

Listen to the language of the portrait

Humming through dancing yellows
She is speaking
Sharing words that words themselves cannot articulate
