DAY 1 22/03/2021
My plans for this week is first of all to finish the painting that I have already stated. I will be working in-between it and my residency project by experimenting with images, forms, space and shadow to create 2D body of works that can be curate in 3D space. My materials will be sourced locally from readily available materials that can be found in my house studio. my waste bin and trash will be useful in this case.
I have just finished preparing the boards, they will serve as the background, and a stand alone part of the installation. I used Liquitex spray after cleaning the boards with sand paper to smoothen it and allow 24 hours to dry depending on the outcome, if it comes out looking glossy, I will rob the surface with 105 grade sand paper for a matt finish.
DAY 2 23/03/2021
With board almost ready, I arranged them on my wooden frame to explore the banality of every day industrial waste from multinationals. The natural elements of these materials provided me with the right effect. Although I have clear idea of what I want to do but I reverted to my early sketch to see how to develop it further.
DAY 3 24/03/2021
Today I am faced with the first real challenge on how to curate this work without exposing the part or the back of the work that I do not want the public to see in an exhibition environment, and that brings to mind the question of HOW, WHAT, WHERE and WHO?
How can a two dimensional work be installed in a three dimensional space in a real world?
What material is appropriate for this project and where can I find them?
Where can this work be exhibited? Finally Who are my audience, who do I want to reach out to?
The above image was used by the slave abolitionist movement to highlight and campaign against slave trade. The images will be used to produce a collage installation that are separated from the background. The shadows of these objects on the background, will give the impression of debt.
DAY 4 25/04/2021
Today I decided to study Nelson ship in a bottle as displayed in the fourth plinth, by Yinka Shonibare for inspiration. I hope to find some motivation to developing my new idea. Although my work is not exactly like Nelson Ship in a bottle, but what they share in common is the fact that some of the materials used in the installation are fragile and can easily disintegrate quickly if exposed to atmospheric element.
DAY 5 26/03/2017
I spent the most part of today building and constructing my installation, I made copies of my images and enlarged it to A3 size. I wanted the copies in colour but unfortunately I ran out of coloured ink so I made black and white print I will stick them on cardboard paper to strengthen it before before cutting then out.
DAY 6 27/03/2021
in the processes of making this installation, I came to realise that this work can be created in a larger scale, with a different material and installation technique it can be installed on a 2D or 3D space, indoors or outdoor. Acrylic perspex sheet will be the ideal material for the project with size expected to be 250cm x 210cm, printed images on perspex to be cut out for stand alone installation, collage like arrangement. Acrylic perspex sheet is durable, transparent and can project shadows that that will create debt and form. encasing the installation in a glassed or transparent enclosure, will protect it from negative weather effect.
DAY 7 28/03/2021
At the end of this residency I was able to put the piece together, it came out like I imagined. Although this is not my usual method of painting but I was able to maintain the figurative representation of my objects/ images which is evident in my other paintings. In the process of creating this piece, I realised the need to explore further, and experiment with other materials to produce body of works that will challenge how a painting composition of 2D collage is made, installed and curated in a 3D space with shades and shadow as part of the composition the give the effect of depth and forms.
